Six Things You Should Know About Pension Income Splitting

Six Things You Should Know About Pension Income Splitting

If you’re currently retired or nearing retirement, pension income splitting may be a smart way for you to significantly save on taxes. Amendments made to the Income Tax Act in 2007 have given Canadians an effective way to lower their household’s overall tax bill, but you need to read the fine print before you can collect.

“With tax season looming, pension income splitting could be an option for you and your spouse to consider,” said Investors Group tax and financial planning expert Christine Van Cauwenberghe. “But to ensure an optimal split, you need to look at the fine points carefully.”

Van Cauwenberghe provides these five pension income splitting facts to help you make the most of this opportunity:

1. Income that qualifies for splitting is different if you are under 65 or over 65 years of age. For example, income from a registered pension plan can be split irrespective of the age of the person who receives the pension income. However, RRIF income can be split only if the person receiving the income has attained age 65.

2. Pension income splitting could have an impact on several other tax calculations and credits including OAS benefits, medical expense credits, spousal credit, age credit clawbacks, and quarterly tax installments.

3. You don’t have to split pension income 50 – 50, and split amounts can change each year based on your personal tax situation.

4. Pension income splitting does not require the physical transfer of funds.

5. Pension income splitting is not new. CPP/QPP income splitting (or income sharing) has been allowed for several years.

“Pension income splittingcan be a good option for many households to reduce their annual taxes – but other tax-saving opportunities need to be factored as well,” adds Van Cauwenberghe. “A financial advisor can work with you to ensure that your overall financial plan is on track with your plans for retirement.”

The Truth About Pensions

The Truth About Pensions

There are several questions that seem to continually arise when it comes to talking about pensions. The first, and most crucial question is usually something along the lines of, “Will my working pension be enough for me to retire on?”, followed by a few other closely related questions. If you’re still under 50, you’re probably not terribly concerned (yet) about the answers to these questions. However, if you’re hitting the mid-way mark in your life, you probably can’t find the answers to these questions fast enough.

To get started on answering your all-so-important pension questions, the answer to “Is my working pension going to be enough?” The answer is not likely. “What if I change jobs? Can I take my pension benefits with me?” That depends on the plan. “What if the employer goes broke before I claim my pension benefits?” It’s imperative to keep track of your employer’s plan, but once again, the result will depend on the type of plan.

To investigate further, shortfalls in an employer’s defined plan simply means that the assets of the plan are not large enough to cover the eventual payouts. This is obviously not an ideal situation. The resolution goes something like this. If you’re your plan is funded completely by your employer and your employer remains solvent, then the shortfall is his issue. However, if the plan divided the responsibility between employer and employee, then both will have to make up for the shortfall if the company is not able to do so by the time you claim the benefit. If your employer does not remain solvent, you will most likely end up with a reduced pension, but you will not lose all of it because the assets of pensions are held in trust.

If you are changing jobs and your last employer had an employer’s pension plan, you will need to know what type of plan it was. If you are considering taking your money with you, there should not be any problem with doing that as long as it was a group RRSP. An RRSP would allow you to transfer the funds to another RRSP account tax-free. If you cash it out, it will be subject to tax. Unfortunately, if your plan is one of the defined contribution plans, you are restricted as will most likely have to leave it until your retirement as most of these plans are like locked-down RRSPs known as Locked-In-Retirement Accounts.

The most common question of course, is whether or not an employer’s benefit plan will be enough for your retirement. The answer is usually no. If you’re looking for quick math on what you might need for retirement so you have something to compare the numbers to, here is a quick and efficient rule of thumb. Most people, when they retire, still require around 60 per cent of their total working income to live comfortably during the retirement years.

If you know how much your employer’s retirement plan is worth and can also find out the total of your additional contributions along the way, these numbers should be able to help answer your own question. If you are still trying to start saving for your retirement but cannot see past all the monthly bills, perhaps a consolidation loan can help. If a standard financial institution isn’t a possibility for you, getting a bad credit loan from a private lender could have you on your way to savings in no time.

If you need a loan, but your bad credit is preventing you from obtaining one at a standard financial institution, we can help. Visit our Bad Credit Loans website today, for more information. Visit our blog for more articles about Bad Credit and Debt.

The REAL horrible truth about healthcare “reform” why we have to fight it

www.platformforthefuture.com The Stench of Truth (300).mp4 What is being planned is not a “government takeover of health care”. What is on the table is a mandate to people who don’t have jobs to buy insurance they may not need or want in order to prop up private insurance companies. This is a bailout of the PRIVATE insurance sector. Paid for by you. It is also a systematic destruction of the social safety net of Medicare, and soon that will be followed by Social Security. Far from socialism or socialized medicine my friends. This is the beginning of putting us all at the mercy of rapacious corporations in every area and the so-called “free market”. Just want to set the record straight on this point.

The Numbers Say All You Need to Know About Medicare Supplement Plans

Many people who are enrolled in Medicare are not sure why they would need any additional coverage, such as a Medicare supplement plan, often referred to as a Medigap policy. However, let us discuss some of the benefits and numbers related to Medicare benefits so that you can see the value in a Medicare supplement plan.

When American older adults turn 65, they become eligible to enroll in Medicare Part A. This is the government-subsidized program that provides for hospital benefits. American workers have been paying taxes to fund this Part A program for their entire working life. Therefore, they do not have to pay monthly premiums for this benefit. Part A will pay for hospital medical care for the first 60 days in full after the deductible has been met. Part A will not pay for hospital services beyond 150 days per spell of illness, or skilled nursing facility services past 100 days per spell of illness.

There are several different Medicare supplement plans. The purpose of Medicare supplement plan is to cover some of the medical costs that traditional Medicare will not cover. Although all of the Medicare supplement plans have different combination of benefits, most of them, will pay for additional hospital costs up to an additional year after the Medicare benefits are used up. Other Medicare supplement plans will also cover the Part A deductible.

At this time, the Medicare Supplement plans available to American citizens are identified by the letters A through L. In the future, there will be more Medicare supplement plans. At this time, there are also high-deductible health plans (F and J), which have lower premiums but a higher deductible before the Medicare supplement plans go into effect.

Older adults who enroll in Medicare Part B will pay a monthly premium for Part B benefits. Part B provides coverage for outpatient and physician services. Part B will pay 80% of approved charges, and the member is responsible for the remaining 20%. There is also a Part B deductible before Medicare makes payments. Any balance above the Medicare-approved charges is not covered by either Part A or Part B.

When it comes to Medicare Part B, Medicare supplement plans also help cover some expenses that are not included by Part B. For example, there are four Medicare supplement plans that will cover 80 or 100% of the excess charges not covered by Part B. There are a few Medicare supplement plans that will also cover the Part B deductible. All of the Medicare supplement plans will cover anywhere from 50 to 100% of the Part B coinsurance or copayment portion, excluding copayments for preventive services.

As you can see, Medicare Supplement plans really financially contribute to enrolled members. Although Medicare Parts A and B certainly provided a lot of benefits and covered services, older adults may have difficulty paying their portion of medical expenses, as well as the deductibles and other charges involved. By purchasing a Medicare supplement plan, they will have financial aid when it comes time to receive medical care.

Medicare supplement plans have been standardized since 1992. All of the Medigap policies must be clearly identified as Medicare supplement plans, and each plan must all have the same benefits across companies. However, each health insurance provider is permitted to price it however they see fit. Therefore, it is important to shop around.

Sam Dicosta shares his knowledge on health insurance that makes you able to find the plans that best fits your needs. Tissue donation is a more common option for people wishing to be donors, as there are very few medical reasons (other than having a communicable disease, such as HIV or hepatitis) a person would not be eligible to donate tissue.

Corneas or whole eyes, bone, skin, saphenous and femoral veins, and heart valves are tissues that can be transplanted. Great care is taken in the removal of tissues to ensure acceptable presentation of the body for funeral purposes. Generally, donation will not delay funeral arrangements, and tissue donation does not interfere with an open casket funeral for the donor.

1. If you’d like to donate your heart or other organs when you die, be sure to tell members of your family. In some states, you can state your wishes on the back of your driver’s license. You may also contact an organ donation organization to ask for more information.

2. Families of donors don’t have to pay for removing their loved one’s organs.

3. At least 42 states and the District of Columbia have “required request” laws. That means hospitals must have policies and procedures to tell families about organ donation.

4. All hospitals must have policies and procedures that identify potential donors. Hospitals with Medicare and Medicaid programs must also notify an organ procurement organization (OPO) of potential donors.

5. An OPO is a member in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). UNOS maintains computerized data on potential recipients and donors. UNOS also has a Web site, www.unos.org. It has statistics on waiting times and transplant results. Patients can use it to compare hospitals in their area.

6. The family of a possible donor makes the final decision. If they haven’t been asked to donate and they’d like to, they should ask the doctor or nurse. If the family decides not to donate, the organs won’t be removed.

7. Most donors give multiple organs. For example, the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas and lungs might be taken from one donor. The hospital staff person in charge of identifying donors will find out if the organs are suitable for transplant. Then this person works with the OPO representative to coordinate the distribution of organs.

Heart Donation Guidelines:

Donor hearts are given based on the donor’s blood type and body weight, and the potential recipient’s blood type, body weight, severity of illness and geographic location. Seriously ill patients at a nearby transplant center have priority.

A suitable donor is a young to middle-aged person who’s been declared brain dead based on standard criteria and whose heart still works well. All donors are screened to make sure the hepatitis

B and C and human immunodeficiency (AIDS-producing) viruses aren’t present.

A heart can be disconnected from a person’s circulation for about four hours and still work properly. Thus time is critical. When the heart is removed, the transplant team puts it in a special cold solution to keep it alive (even though it’s not beating). Then it’s rushed to the hospital where the recipient is located.

Learn Facts about Pension Funding

Learn Facts about Pension Funding

What does the phrase pension funding truly mean? Pension funding lets pensioners borrow money from their pension while not taking a loan on pensions. In return for receiving a number of the pensioner’s future pension payments, pension funding companies will provide immediate cash from pension for pensioners. Qualified retirees may sell a specific portion of their pension funding in exchange for a lump sum of cash from their pension if they need to cover an unexpected expense or finance an opportunity that has come their way. Who is pension funding right for? Pension funding is a legitimate retirement planning option. As such, only those who receive a pension are eligible. Also, it is likely suitable for persons who suddenly find themselves in a particularly dire financial circumstance. Therefore, it is highly recommended that anyone seriously contemplating pension funding first seek qualified and independent financial advice prior to engaging any pension funding company.

Cash from pension can also be used for debt consolidation, to pay education expenses, to make a down payment for a home, to invest for future earnings, to finalize a divorce settlement, to start or expand a business, to purchase an automobile or other vehicle, or to pay medical bills.

Cash from pension plans are advantageous when you need immediate funds. Cash from pension will provide the pensioner a pension lump sum that may be accessed within as little as three to six weeks. You can leverage your military, civil service, or corporate pension to secure cash from pension. You can avoid the bank – for banks don’t recognize pensions as collateral. You can avoid the high interest rates incurred by those who choose to procure needed cash by getting cash advances. How can you use pension funding to your advantage and what processes are involved?

To begin, it is pertinent to get educated about the process. Realize that money the pensioner receives from the pension funding company is not a loan on pensions, but an advance against future pension payments. How it works is a fairly straightforward process:  pension funding companies purchase a number of years of pension payments for a cash amount paid to the pensioner today. Subsequently, the company collects its payments from future pension payments. After a pensioner applies for a pension advance, the underwriting department requests to view the pensioners credit history and credit report. Then the funding company will set up an automated advance repayment system. When these beginning processes are approved, the pension company requires that records of this process be added to an existing policy. Pending final approval, the lump cash from pension sum is directly deposited into whatever account the pensioner selects.
